Samsung recently announced a new line of smartwatches – the Gear S2 ahead of IFA and showcased them at the event in Berlin. Once upon a time when the inception of the Gear S took place, it only worked with specific Samsung devices. With the launch of Gear S2, now it works with most Android smartphones but still does not work on iOS / iPhone.

Samsung is looking to change that fact since Gear S2 is one of the best smartwatches out there and it deserves to compatible with most smartphones, irrespective of the platform. Also, recently Google released the Android Wear app for iPhone and hence most smartwatches running on Android Wear is now compatible with iPhones.
Samsung has officially said that these watches will work with Android devices running on Android 4.4 KitKat or later and has to come with at least 1.5GB of RAM. Now, according to a DigitalSpy report, Samsung wants to target a bigger audience. A company representative has stated that iPhone support might be on its way. If Samsung manages to achieve this feat, the Gear S2 will be a serious competitor to the Apple Watch.

Samsung Gear S2 / Gear S2 Classic / Gear S2 3G Specifications
The Samsung Gear S2 features a 1.2-inch (360 x 360 pixels) Circular Super AMOLED display with a pixel density of 302 ppi. In case of Gear S2 and S2 Classic, they are powered by a dual-core Exynos 3250 processor whereas the Gear S2 3G is powered by a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor. It has 512 MB of RAM and comes with 4 GB of internal memory which is not expandable via microSD card. It runs on Tizen based wearable platform that is developed by Samsung.
These smartwatches come with Home and Back buttons to access notifications and apps easily. They also have a rotating bezel. In case of Gear S2, it comes with a silicone band that looks modern and gives a minimal look whereas the Gear S2 Classic comes with a genuine leather band, which compliments it with a Black finish to give it a more premium look. The company has also partnered with others to offer many watch faces and third-party watch bands.
All the variants of the Gear S2 smartwatch has IP67 certification which makes them dust and water-resistant. On the connectivity front, they come with WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 LE and NFC for mobile payments. In case of Gear S2 3G, it has 2G, 3G and ability to call via the watch using a SIM card. These smartwatches also come with loads of sensors including – Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Heart Rate monitor, Ambient Light and Barometer.
The Gear S2 and Classic packs in a 250 mAh Li-ion battery under the hood whereas the Gear S2 3G has a 300 mAh Li-ion battery. All of them supports wireless charging. The Samsung Gear S2 and Gear S2 3G is available in Dark Gray case with a Dark Gray band and Silver case with a White band. The Gear S2 Classic comes in Black case with a Leather band. The pricing was also revealed and these will go on sale starting this October.
